Measurement driven single temperature engine
A four stroke quantum engine which alternately interacts with a measurement
apparatus and a single heat bath is discussed in detail with respect to the
average work and heat as well as to the fluctuations of work and heat. The
efficiency and the reliability of such an engine with a harmonic oscillator as
working substance are analyzed under different conditions such as different
speeds of the work strokes, different temperatures of the heat bath and various
strengths of the energy supplying measurement. For imperfect thermalization
strokes of finite duration also the power of the engine is analyzed. A
comparison with a two-temperature Otto engine is provided in the particular
case of adiabatic work and ideal thermalization strokes.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, typos correcte
Transcriptomic Analysis Identifies Candidate Genes Related to Intramuscular Fat Deposition and Fatty Acid Composition in the Breast Muscle of Squabs (Columba)
Despite the fact that squab is consumed throughout the world because of its high nutritional value and appreciated sensory attributes, aspects related to its characterization, and in particular genetic issues, have rarely been studied. In this study, meat traits in terms of pH, water-holding capacity, intramuscular fat content, and fatty acid profile of the breast muscle of squabs from two meat pigeon breeds were determined. Breed-specific differences were detected in fat-related traits of intramuscular fat content and fatty acid composition. RNA-Sequencing was applied to compare the transcriptomes of muscle and liver tissues between squabs of two breeds to identify candidate genes associated with the differences in the capacity of fat deposition. A total of 27 differentially expressed genes assigned to pathways of lipid metabolism were identified, of which, six genes belonged to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway along with four other genes. Our results confirmed in part previous reports in livestock and provided also a number of genes which had not been related to fat deposition so far. These genes can serve as a basis for further investigations to screen markers closely associated with intramuscular fat content and fatty acid composition in squabs. The data from this study were deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)’s Sequence Read Archive under the accession numbers SRX1680021 and SRX1680022. This is the first transcriptome analysis of the muscle and liver tissue in Columba using next generation sequencing technology. Data provided here are of potential value to dissect functional genes influencing fat deposition in squabs
Flexible Carbon Nanotube-Epitaxially Grown Nanocrystals for Micro-Thermoelectric Modules
Flexible thermoelectric materials have attracted increasing interest because of their potential use in thermal energy harvesting and high-spatial-resolution thermal management. However, a high-performance flexible micro-thermoelectric device (TED) compatible with the microelectronics fabrication process has not yet been developed. Here a universal epitaxial growth strategy is reported guided by 1D van der Waals-coupling, to fabricate freestanding and flexible hybrids comprised of single-wall carbon nanotubes and ordered (Bi,Sb)(2)Te-3 nanocrystals. High power factors ranging from approximate to 1680 to approximate to 1020 mu W m(-1) K(-2 )in the temperature range of 300-480 K, combined with a low thermal conductivity yield a high average figure of merit of approximate to 0.81. The fabricated flexible micro-TED module consisting of two p-n couples of freestanding thermoelectric hybrids has an unprecedented open circuit voltage of approximate to 22.7 mV and a power density of approximate to 0.36 W cm(-2) under approximate to 30 K temperature difference, and a net cooling temperature of approximate to 22.4 K and a heat absorption density of approximate to 92.5 W cm(-2)
